We demonstrate our dedication to the SDGs through three strategic pillars, forming the cornerstone of our initiatives and projects. Our main goals are to reduce our environmental impact in every aspect of our operations, create a safe and sustainable workplace for everyone in the sector, and maintain transparency about our environmental and social efforts for all stakeholders. Partnerships
We collaborate with various organizations and initiatives to help build a more sustainable future. As participants in the Floriculture Sustainability Initiative (FSI), we work together with other members toward a common goal: ensuring that by 2025, 90% of our trade originates from certified and sustainable sources.
In partnership with organizations such as Royal FloraHolland, Royal Lemkes, Floral Trade Group, and Dutch Flower Group, we are part of ‘The Accelerators’ and have pledged to a manifesto designed to accelerate the achievement of FSI’s objectives as well as those of other sustainability initiatives.
Transparency
Transparency is our commitment to the future. We make sure that our operations, their impact on people and the environment, and the footprint of our products are presented clearly and understandably. By following the CSRD requirements for sustainable reporting, we ensure that all our actions and claims are traceable and verifiable.
At Verdel Florist, transparency forms a core pillar of our corporate social responsibility (CSR/CRS) efforts. Since we source plants and flowers from regions across the globe, we believe it is essential that our customers can access reliable information about the products they purchase. This includes insights into certifications, origin, production conditions, and their social and environmental impact.
Sustainable sourcing
We strive to source plants and flowers from growers holding multiple sustainability certifications, in line with the Floriculture Sustainability Initiative (FSI) standards for environmental, agricultural, and social responsibility. We collaborate closely with growers working toward FSI compliance, providing guidance through educational sessions.
Furthermore, we are currently assessing the sustainability of our packaging to ensure eco-friendly solutions for ourselves, our growers, and our customers. Overall, responsible procurement is a key component of our broader sustainability strategy. We also empower our customers to make informed decisions by providing detailed information about various sustainability labels in our webshop.
Sustainable facilities & transport
We are committed to lowering CO₂ emissions across our operations, using green electricity in all our locations. By calculating our full carbon footprint, we can make focused, data-driven improvements. As a result, we have upgraded to energy-efficient infrastructure, including LED lighting, solar panels, and rainwater collection systems.
We are also developing strategies to minimize the environmental impact of commuting and product transport. Our waste management approach includes a customer return system that recovers more than 1,200 tons of waste each year. In addition, we are exploring further opportunities to reduce waste generation, strengthen circular practices, convert waste into energy, and potentially transform waste materials into sustainable products.
